Prior to buying our biUbe we had a few questions that were difficult to find answers for on the internet, I have endeavored to remember these questions in the hope that they may be of some use to you:
Q. Can I keep tropical fish in it?
A. Yes but you will need to buy the heater pack.
Q. An aquarium has gravel in the bottom of it… doesn’t it? Do I need to buy gravel?

The ceramic media
A. No, it comes with ‘ceramic media’, I had no idea what this was, let me enlighten you. Ceramic media is the replacement for the gravel traditionally used in the bottom of aquariums. They’re shown in the picture on the right – they look like stone chippings. The ceramic media is absolutely essential to the ecology (see the Aquarium Filtration article) of your biUbe… so don’t be tempted to replace them with some bright coloured gravel!
Q. When can I put the fish in?
A. Now, I know you want me to say straight away but unfortunately this is not the case. For the welfare of your fish you should ideally have the tank setup and running for at least 48hrs.
Q. How often do I have to clean it?
A. About every four to eight weeks, it’s very easy to do and I will explain in a later article.
Q. What’s in the box?
A. As standard the following:
- Tank with silver lid and base (black is available)
- Halogen Light
- 5 stage internal filter
- Halogen light
- Ceramic media
- Air pump
- Plug top 12 volt transformer
- Water treatment
- Fish food
- - Instructions
But various retailers offer special packs that include the heater and/or marine conversion kit.
Q. What are the dimensions?
A. Diameter 36.2cm, Height 47.7cm
Q. How much water does it hold?
A. 35 litres

I was wondering if it would work to add other types of gravel in with the ceramic media? or if there is another, equally useful substrate that i could use in place of it that would also act as a biological filter. (i want black substrate!)
Hi
Your blog has been very useful to me since were thinking about purchasing a biube also. There is one thing I can’t find on your blog.
Can you tell me what kind of maintenance you’ve done on the biube and what kind of things did you need for one year.
Thanks in advance
